Sea Island was once known as "Millionaire Island" and was privately owned by a wealthy family. In 1911 a private resort was built named The Cloister. Few people know that Sea Island was once home to Howard Coffin whom founded the Hudson Motor Company that sold cars for less than $1000.? It can also be said that he is responsible for the Sea Island we know and love today as his business endeavors allowed the community to flourish.? Sea Island is a private community and is very limited to public access. Recently The Cloister was rebuilt and the culture and history lives on in Sea Island.
?Before Howard´s time Sea Island was actually known as Fifth Creek by the native Americans and was used as a fishing ground and was a popular grazing site for the local animal population.? Since then Sea Island has gone through several name changes including Isle of Palms, Long Island, Glynn Isle, and then finally Sea Island.? Indeed the history of Sea Island is deep and rich and residents there will tell you that it is reflected within the community.
